In New York City
What: Brooklyn Art Song Society presents: InContext: Tom Cipullo Where: Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, 58 7th Ave, Park Slope, Brooklyn; Tenri Cultural Institute 43A W. 13th St. New York, NY When: Friday, Feb. 4 7PM (Brooklyn Conservatory); Friday, March 19th 7PM (Tenri) Tickets are $20 Regular, $10 Students and Seniors The Brooklyn Art Song Society is proud to announce the inaugural concert in its new music series: In Context. In context presents the songs of prominent living composers with masterworks from the standard repertoire in such a way that new music is made more accessible and old works are given fresh meaning. This year’s featured composer is Tom Cipullo, whose Opera Glory Denied was performed this fall to a rave review from the New York Times. Mr. Cipullo’s most recent song cycles will be paired with masterpieces by Robert Schumann. Cipullo’s Of a Certain Age will be paired with Schumann’s Frauenliebe und –laben (A Woman’s Love and Life) as both works perfectly capture womanhood in their respective time periods. In contrast, the second half features two sets for male voices: Cipullo’s America 1968 and Dichterliebe. As a an added bonus special guest Paul Sperry will perform the New York premiere of Mr. Cipullo’s Singing with Brooklyn Art Song Society’s Artistic Director, Michael Brofman at the Piano. Also performing are some of New York’s most talented pianists and singers: Amy van Roekel, Julieanne Klein, sopranos; David Williams, Robert Osborne, baritones; Miori Sugyiama, Michael Rose and David Friend, pianists. Don’t miss this exciting and innovative recital by New York’s most promising new ensemble. About Brooklyn Art Song Society: The Brooklyn Art Song Society is a collective of singers and pianists who share a love for the vast repertoire of poetry set to music.
